Toronto artist Samar Hejazi was initially in disbelief when she received an email from the Met Gala’s curator last year, inviting her to showcase her art at the prestigious event. However, after a Zoom call with curator Andrew Bolton, the Palestinian Canadian artist based in Dubai began preparing to feature her unique creations at the renowned fashion extravaganza.
The Met Gala, an annual fundraiser celebrated for its extravagant fashion, raises substantial funds for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, which houses a vast collection of fashion artifacts spanning centuries. This year’s gala theme, “costume art,” will showcase bespoke mannequins adorned with historical costumes under steel heads with reflective mirror surfaces instead of faces.
Hejazi, known for her expertise in sculpture, textiles, printmaking, and installation, shared insights with host Nil KÓ§ksal of As It Happens as she readied herself to grace the red carpet. She described the surreal experience of witnessing her artwork integrated into the exhibit space, emphasizing the transformative power it holds when displayed to a wider audience.
The artist aimed to engage viewers in a more immersive experience through her creations, encouraging active participation and introspection. Reflecting on the significance of her visibility as a Palestinian Canadian artist at the Met Gala, Hejazi highlighted the inspirational impact it could have on others from similar backgrounds aspiring to achieve similar heights.
Despite controversies surrounding the event and concerns over the involvement of key funders like Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos, Hejazi acknowledged the importance of her presence as a representative of her heritage. She expressed her mixed feelings but ultimately recognized the value of showcasing her art on such a prominent platform.
Hejazi shared her excitement about wearing a customized gown by Palestinian designer Zaid Farouki for the red carpet walk, acknowledging her nervousness about being the center of attention compared to observing reactions to her artistic creations.
