The 23-year-old from Quispamsis qualified for the PGA Tour Americas Explore N.B. Open after clinching a victory in a playoff at the New Brunswick Men’s Amateur tournament last summer.
Securing a sponsor’s exemption for the tournament, Nick stands as the lone amateur and New Brunswick representative among over 150 participants. The father-son duo embarked on the golfing journey together, with Darren serving as Nick’s caddie.
Expressing his excitement and nerves, Nick described the experience as a rare opportunity. Despite feeling slightly out of his comfort zone, he embraced the challenge positively. Darren, a seasoned golfer with notable accomplishments, including two-time winner of the same amateur tournament that propelled Nick into the Explore N.B. Open, expressed pride in his son’s skills and progress.
Nick’s first-round performance saw him finish 3-over par, with the second round ending 2-over par, accumulating a total of 5-over par by the tournament cut-off. Unfortunately, falling short of the cut line at 6-below par, Nick missed the chance to compete in the weekend rounds.
Golfing prowess runs in the Ritchie family, with Nick’s sister, Courtney Ritchie, also actively involved in the sport. As Nick’s former caddie during his men’s provincial championship victory, she shared the sentiment of pride and support for her brother’s professional debut.
Balancing his passion for golf with two jobs, Nick works as a custom club fitter for Callaway and at the Hampton Golf Club. Despite juggling multiple roles, he garnered immense support from his hometown community and beyond, highlighting the unity and encouragement he received.
