“Soccer Fan Shuns Viking Row Celebration After Norway’s Win”

When Norway achieved victory over Brazil in the recent World Cup match, fans worldwide celebrated with the traditional Viking Row, except for one Norwegian soccer fan named Emil Anners Lappen. Lappen made headlines for refusing to participate in the Viking Row celebration during Norway’s historic win against Senegal.

In an interview with As It Happens, Lappen, a forestry manager from Bergegarda, Norway, expressed his disapproval of the Viking Row dance. He found it unenjoyable and pointed out two main reasons for his objection. Firstly, he believed it was too similar to Iceland’s Viking Thunderclap. Secondly, he noted that the chant’s lyrics inaccurately referenced rowing across the Atlantic, whereas historical Vikings sailed the ocean instead of rowing long distances.

Experts in Viking history and archaeology supported Lappen’s views. They acknowledged that while Vikings did row their ships for certain purposes, such as maneuvering in battles and close-quarter situations, the idea of rowing across the Atlantic would have been extremely challenging. Despite differing opinions, the debate over the historical accuracy of the Viking Row continues.

Norwegian superfan Ole Frøystad, who introduced the chant, defended its authenticity by explaining the pre-battle rituals of Vikings. However, Lappen remained skeptical, emphasizing the discrepancy between the chant’s lyrics and historical facts.

Archaeologist Howard Williams from Chester University raised concerns about the claim of rowing to America, highlighting that the concept of Norwegians reaching Turtle Island was historically inaccurate. While some experts believe the Viking Row should be viewed as a morale-boosting and fun tradition rather than a strictly historical practice, the debate between historical accuracy and celebratory spirit persists.

Looking ahead, Norway is set to face England in the quarter-finals of the FIFA Men’s World Cup this Saturday.
