A man armed with a rifle crashed into a Michigan synagogue, described by federal officials as an intentional attack, following the recent loss of four family members in an Israeli airstrike in Lebanon. The incident took place at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield Township near Detroit, where the assailant, Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, a 41-year-old U.S. citizen from Lebanon, was fatally shot by security forces after driving his vehicle down a hallway, which subsequently caught fire.
The FBI, leading the investigation, labeled the attack on the prominent Reform synagogue as a violent act targeting the Jewish community. Fortunately, the synagogue staff, teachers, and 140 children from the early childhood center were unharmed during the incident, according to Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard.
Ghazali had immigrated to the U.S. in 2011 through family sponsorship and obtained U.S. citizenship in 2016. The tragic event was a result of a recent Israeli airstrike in Mashgharah, Lebanon, which claimed the lives of four individuals, including Ghazali’s two brothers and their children. The airstrike occurred amidst escalating tensions in the region due to ongoing conflicts involving Israel and Hezbollah.
In the aftermath of the attack, Rabbi Arianna Gordon expressed gratitude to the security team, law enforcement, and teachers for ensuring the safety of the children. Parents rushed to reunite with their children after the authorities secured the building, with additional families gathering at a nearby Jewish community center.
