WestJet is allowing passengers with flights booked between July 30 and Aug. 4 to change or cancel their reservations once without any charges. The Calgary-based airline introduced this measure to offer travelers more flexibility and confidence in their future travel plans amidst an ongoing labor disagreement with flight attendants.
Earlier this month, WestJet flight attendants voted overwhelmingly, with 99.4% in favor of a strike. This means approximately 4,400 union members, represented by CUPE Local 8125, could potentially go on strike legally starting on Aug. 2.
In an email to WestJet Rewards members, the airline expressed optimism in reaching an agreement without disrupting guests. However, acknowledging the apprehension surrounding travel plans, WestJet emphasized the importance of addressing customer concerns.
CUPE 8125 president, Alia Hussain, commended WestJet’s decision, highlighting the need for flexibility during uncertain times. While the move does not confirm an imminent strike, Hussain viewed it as a responsible action typical of a reputable organization.
Notably, WestJet faced a significant labor conflict back in the summer of 2024 when unionized airline mechanics went on strike over the Canada Day long weekend, affecting tens of thousands of travelers. The airline reaffirmed its commitment to ongoing negotiations, aiming to enhance conditions for cabin crew members while ensuring the long-term viability of WestJet.
