Prime Minister Mark Carney delivered a compelling speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, drawing praise for his candid assessment of the current state of the world and the necessary direction forward. While not directly naming U.S. President Donald Trump, Carney highlighted the use of economic integration as a tool by “American hegemony” and other major powers. Emphasizing that the old order is irreversibly shifting, Carney called for a proactive approach to building a stronger and more just global framework.

In his 16-minute address, Carney not only criticized the actions of the U.S. under Trump but also proposed a bold strategy for middle powers like Canada to unite and engage with major powers from a position of strength. Political leaders worldwide, from Australia to Europe to Mexico, reacted to the speech, acknowledging its significance in navigating the evolving global landscape.

Finnish President Alexander Stubb commended Carney’s speech as an insightful analysis of the changing world order and emphasized the importance of values-based realism in shaping Canadian foreign policy. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte echoed Stubb’s sentiments, affirming that Canada is reasserting itself as a key player within NATO and on the international stage.

California Governor Gavin Newsom revealed that several U.S. leaders privately shared Carney’s speech transcript, acknowledging its impact even within the American political sphere. Newsom praised Carney for his courage and called for similar clarity and conviction in addressing global challenges.

On the other hand, U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick criticized Canada’s complaints about U.S. treatment, pointing out the favorable trade deal Canada enjoys. Meanwhile, Australia’s Treasurer Jim Chalmers and former Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull lauded Carney’s emphasis on cooperation and upholding sovereignty in dealing with dominant powers like the U.S.

Estonian Parliament’s Marko Mihkelson and former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt also expressed admiration for Carney’s speech, highlighting its call for standing up against bullies and advocating for global cooperation. Alastair Campbell, former director of communications for Tony Blair, commended Carney for his stance against Trump, noting the speech’s significance in the current political discourse.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and opposition figure Juan Ignacio Zavala Gutiérrez praised Carney’s speech for resonating with the prevailing global dynamics and the need for emerging forces like Canada to form alliances to navigate the influence of major powers.
