Provincial authorities are scheduled to confer with the St. Mary’s town council on Monday following severe winds that ripped apart a derelict fish sauce plant. Mayor Steve Ryan is urging the federal government, particularly the Coast Guard, to intervene and contain the situation to safeguard the fishing grounds in the area.
The plant sustained significant damage when one side of the structure was torn off by high winds, exposing 110 vats of decomposing fish sauce to the elements. Since the discovery in 2016 of harmful effluent polluting the ocean and causing fish fatalities, Mayor Ryan has been seeking federal assistance to demolish the building.
Situated just 50 feet from the ocean, the compromised plant poses an imminent threat of leaking its noxious contents back into the water, especially with more high winds expected. Consequently, a nearby residence is slated for evacuation on Monday amid concerns that the plant’s roof could be lifted off by the strong winds. Deputy Mayor Yvonne Bishop has cautioned residents in the vicinity to be prepared to evacuate if conditions worsen.
Bishop advocates for the Coast Guard’s involvement in addressing the crisis, criticizing the federal government for its apparent inaction. The enduring foul odor emanating from the plant has been a long-standing issue for the town, described as a persistent stench of decaying fish that is intolerable for residents.
In response to the escalating situation, provincial officials will engage with the town council to assess the damage, outline future actions, and ensure the safety of residents. The province has underscored the significance of swiftly and securely disposing of the organic waste while mitigating associated risks through interdepartmental collaboration.
Liberal MHA Sherry Gambin-Walsh emphasized the urgency of removing the plant, stating that the recent windstorm has exacerbated the situation. Residents are advised to stay vigilant and prepared for potential evacuation orders. Efforts to secure interviews with Avalon MP Paul Connors and Federal Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson are underway, with updates pending on their responses.
