In response to the flooding, residents are taking measures such as cutting open roads to allow water flow and protect infrastructure. Darryl Deighton, from Canora Beach Resort near Good Spirit Lake, is monitoring the rising water levels, expecting to reach flood stage soon as more snow melts in the north.
The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency is currently handling 20 active flooding incidents, surpassing the year-to-date average with 26 incidents. Several towns, rural municipalities, and First Nations have declared states of emergency. The Opposition NDP criticizes the government for reducing funding for essential infrastructure like highways and dams, emphasizing the need for proactive measures.
Minister Michael Weger visited the Quill Lake region to assess the situation and offer support to affected residents. The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency is providing resources such as sandbags, water pumps, and personnel to communities in need.
