Marques described the fundraising endeavor as a “moonshot,” expressing hope that the campaign would cover most, if not all, of the restoration costs. Any surplus funds gathered will be reinvested into the ongoing project. Over the past weekend, more than 210 individuals donated over $54,000 through the Rideau Hall Foundation’s website, with an average contribution exceeding $250. The charity has capped individual donations at $5 million and received additional pledges totaling $50,000, bringing the total raised to over $100,000.
While the exact cost of restoring 24 Sussex has long been shrouded in secrecy, various estimates have been circulated. Carney refrained from disclosing specific figures, citing ongoing considerations and competition factors. The government is set to manage security expenses, with Carney affirming efforts to optimize these costs. The RCMP, in recent documents released under the Access to Information Act, redacted financial details related to security assessments and recommendations for the site.
The National Capital Commission, responsible for overseeing the official residence, also redacted cost breakdowns in recent documents. Insights from an unredacted document highlighted specific spatial requirements for the residence, including living areas for the prime minister and family, as well as designated government spaces for official functions. The commission highlighted the need for discretion in disclosing financial details to safeguard national interests.
Marques expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from Canadians, emphasizing the significance of 24 Sussex as a symbol of national pride and identity. The initiative to crowdfund the restoration marks a shift in public engagement, reflecting a renewed interest in preserving the historic property. Media access to the residence was granted recently, revealing the deteriorated state of the once prestigious building.
