The Alberta government has successfully evacuated all remaining campers who were stranded in Kananaskis Country due to heavy rainfall and landslides. Parks Alberta Minister Todd Loewen confirmed that approximately 50 individuals were taking shelter in the area, which is still under a local state of emergency.
In an update shared on social media later in the day, Loewen announced that everyone in the affected area can now leave safely. Over 100 kilometers of roads in provincial parks along Alberta’s Rocky Mountains had to be closed due to landslides and flooding.
Communities throughout Alberta have experienced significant rainfall in recent days, leading to a flood warning for the Elbow River, which runs from Kananaskis Country eastward into Calgary. Canmore has lifted its local state of emergency but has issued a high stream-flow advisory urging residents to avoid embankments.
Minister Loewen emphasized ongoing efforts to ensure Kananaskis remains a safe destination for both Albertans and visitors. Despite the challenges, some individuals and groups have opted to remain in the area to continue enjoying the natural beauty of Alberta’s K-Country.
