Hayley Wickenheiser is parting ways with the Toronto Maple Leafs after dedicating eight seasons to the NHL team’s front office. The decision was announced by Wickenheiser in an Instagram post on Thursday, following discussions with the new Maple Leafs general manager, John Chayka. Despite anticipating a continued impactful role within the organization, Wickenheiser revealed that the leadership had a different vision.
Joining the Maple Leafs in August 2018 as the assistant director of player development post her illustrious playing career, Wickenheiser was later promoted to assistant general manager in July 2022. Known for leading Canada to four Olympic gold medals and seven world championships, she holds the record as Canada’s career points leader with 168 goals and 211 assists in 276 games.
Wickenheiser’s departure is part of a recent restructuring within the Maple Leafs front office, which saw several employees, including herself, being let go. General Manager John Chayka expressed gratitude for the contributions of those impacted by the organizational changes, emphasizing that the decisions were made after careful evaluation and were not a reflection of their dedication. Chayka conveyed well wishes for their future endeavors.
