“Alberta Court Upholds Disciplinary Action Against Veterinarian”

The highest court in Alberta has affirmed disciplinary actions against an Edmonton veterinarian, Dr. Ignacio Tan III, who has a history of medical malpractice violations spanning a decade. The Alberta Court of Appeal’s ruling upheld sanctions imposed by the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association (ABVMA), stemming from Tan’s misconduct, including sedating a cat without proper supervision and deceiving owners about the cremation of their pet’s remains.

In a decision made public on May 25, the Court of Appeal supported the penalties issued by the ABVMA in May 2024, when Tan was found guilty of four counts of unprofessional conduct related to an incident from June 2020. Court documents revealed that Tan performed surgery on a cat with a blocked urethra at Mercy Animal Hospital, where he was employed, leading to the cat’s death two days later.

The owners had requested individual cremation for their pet but were given communal ashes instead, falsely claimed to be their cat’s. Tan was reprimanded for conducting surgery without a designated anesthetist present and for administering sedatives without proper assistance, indicating a lack of knowledge in veterinary practice. Subsequently, he received a written reprimand, a 60-day suspension, and was mandated to undergo additional training.

Tan’s litigious history includes numerous appeals against disciplinary actions by the ABVMA. He denied any wrongdoing, attributing the actions to his advocacy for affordable veterinary care. Despite Tan’s claims, the courts have consistently upheld the sanctions against him, citing repeated professional misconduct and patient harm.

Tan’s extensive record of violations underscores the importance of escalating sanctions for veterinarians with a history of misconduct. Regulatory bodies are facing an increase in complaints related to veterinary care, signaling a shift in how pet owners perceive their animals and seek accountability within the industry. Tan’s disciplinary history serves as a cautionary tale for regulators to prioritize public protection over member interests.

As Tan faces the consequences of his actions, his future reinstatement as a practicing veterinarian would necessitate a rigorous review of his disciplinary past. The ABVMA emphasizes the importance of maintaining high ethical standards within the profession and ensuring accountability for misconduct. Tan’s case is deemed an outlier, requiring careful consideration and adherence to legal protocols in addressing such instances.

Tan’s registration was canceled due to non-payment of dues, and any potential reinstatement would involve a thorough evaluation of his conduct and adherence to ethical standards. The ABVMA stands by its decisions against Tan, emphasizing the unique nature of his case and the need to uphold regulatory integrity.
