Opposition is growing within the Quebec faction of the federal Conservative Party over the proposed nomination of controversial hockey commentator Don Cherry for the Order of Canada.
Quebec’s Conservative lieutenant, Pierre Paul-Hus, expressed his disapproval in a recent social media post, citing Cherry’s “unacceptable remarks towards the Quebec nation and francophones” as reasons why appointing him would not be wise.
The Order of Canada is bestowed upon individuals in recognition of their exceptional achievements, significant contributions to the nation, or outstanding dedication to a community.
Conservative MP Andrew Lawton is spearheading the nomination effort and has been gathering signatures for an online petition on the party’s website. Lawton defended Cherry, highlighting his long-standing support for hockey and veterans, stating that Cherry has often vocalized opinions shared by many without hesitation.
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, along with other party members, has voiced support for Cherry’s nomination, praising him as a symbol of Canadian pride. Cherry, known for his flamboyant suits during his tenure on the “Coach’s Corner” segment of Hockey Night in Canada, has faced criticism for his controversial comments over the years.
Several incidents, including mispronouncing names of foreign-born and francophone players, as well as making disparaging remarks about female reporters and immigrants, led to Cherry’s dismissal from Hockey Night in Canada in 2019.
Despite Cherry’s dismissal, some Conservatives believe he embodies authenticity and independence that resonate with many Canadians. However, a growing number of Quebec Conservative MPs have expressed their opposition to Cherry’s potential recognition, citing his divisive and disrespectful remarks towards francophones.
MP Luc Berthold emphasized that the Order of Canada should be reserved for individuals who represent the values of inclusivity and unity, which Cherry’s past comments have contradicted. Similarly, MP Gérard Deltell criticized Cherry for his disrespectful remarks and questioned his suitability for such an honor.
While some MPs have supported Cherry’s nomination, others, like Quebec NDP representative Charles Orme, have condemned it, calling on the Conservative Party to withdraw the proposal based on Cherry’s past statements.
The controversy surrounding Cherry’s nomination continues to spark debate within the Conservative Party, with differing opinions on whether his contributions to sports outweigh his controversial remarks.
