“Parks Canada Merchandise Sales Aid Rare Coastal Plant Protection”

Parks Canada is implementing measures to safeguard a rare coastal plant found at Kouchibouguac National Park in New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island National Park. This year, the purchase of official Parks Canada merchandise such as shirts and tote bags online will contribute to the conservation efforts aimed at protecting the Gulf of St. Lawrence beach pinweed in these two parks.

David Mazerolle, the ecosystem scientist at Kouchibouguac, highlighted that the global population of this plant has significantly declined due to climate change and harsh winter storms. With milder winter temperatures leading to the loss of coastal ice, the impact of winter storms on these ecosystems has been heightened.

Parks Canada is actively involved in seed collection, collaborating with Acadia University to explore methods for germinating and cultivating the species. The goal is to transplant the beach pinweed into new habitats where it does not currently exist, fostering its growth and survival.

The uniqueness and rarity of the beach pinweed species in eastern Canada make its protection crucial. This specific variety is exclusive to the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence region, distinguishing it as a species not found anywhere else in the world.

The Gulf of St. Lawrence beach pinweed is described as a small shrub standing around 20 to 30 centimeters tall, thriving on stable dune systems away from the ocean waves. The majority of this plant’s population is situated on lands managed jointly by Parks Canada and Mi’kmaw First Nations, positioning Parks Canada as a key player in its conservation efforts.

The conservation work being carried out serves as an insurance policy for the beach pinweed species, as its natural habitats face threats from climate change. Preserving these coastal landscapes is crucial, given their vulnerability to climate change impacts.

Efforts to protect the beach pinweed highlight its significance as an indicator of climate change effects on coastal ecosystems. By safeguarding this species, researchers aim to monitor and mitigate these impacts, preventing the potential extinction of the beach pinweed due to environmental changes.

The ongoing transplantation efforts led by Mazerolle and his team have shown promising results. Initial transplants have been successful, and the process of germinating the plants at Acadia University has yielded encouraging outcomes, setting the stage for further planting in the national parks.

Lindsey Burke, a resource management officer at Prince Edward Island National Park, emphasized the decline of the species on the island due to climate change and coastal erosion. Protecting these areas crucial for the beach pinweed also ensures the preservation of the wider dune ecosystems.

Collaboration with Acadia University and the transplantation initiatives aim to establish self-sustaining populations of the pinweed within the parks, providing a helping hand to ensure the species’ survival in changing environmental conditions. Acclimatizing the plants to park conditions before planting enhances their chances of thriving in their new habitats.
