Toronto is eagerly awaiting confirmation of $97 million in funding from the Ontario government for the upcoming FIFA World Cup matches set to take place at BMO Field, soon to be renamed Toronto Stadium. The city’s FIFA secretariat provided an update on funding and revenue to the World Cup subcommittee, highlighting that the provincial funding agreement is still under negotiation.
The total budget for the six matches is $380 million, with the city contributing close to $180 million and the federal government pledging about $104 million, leaving the remaining funds to be sourced from the province. Councillor Paul Ainslie emphasized the need for the Ontario government to fulfill its commitment, stressing the economic benefits that the event will bring through tax revenue.
FIFA projects a positive economic impact of $1.3 billion for Toronto from hosting the matches. Councillor Amber Morley echoed Ainslie’s sentiments, emphasizing the importance of the provincial government meeting its obligations as a key partner in hosting the tournament and leveraging tax revenues from visitor spending.
While the city expected cash contributions from the province, part of the funding will be in the form of services such as policing, transportation, and healthcare. Discussions between the city and the province have revolved around the valuation of these services, with ongoing negotiations to ensure clarity on the provincial contribution.
Premier Doug Ford’s office clarified that the $97 million commitment includes provincial services, with ongoing efforts to accurately identify and cost these services. Should the cash component fall short, the city will explore alternative funding sources or cost-cutting measures. Mayor Olivia Chow has highlighted the city’s financial constraints, emphasizing the need for effective collaboration with the province to manage World Cup expenses within budget constraints.
