From red light face masks to Botox injections, the market is flooded with anti-aging products and treatments. Recent studies suggest that women are now feeling the pressure to maintain a youthful appearance at a much younger age.
Driven by the surge of anti-aging content on social media platforms, Megan Lindloff, a psychology PhD graduate from Western University, delved into this trend. Her research uncovered that exposure to age-related stigma, particularly on social media, is amplifying anxiety around aging in younger women. This, in turn, is pushing them towards using anti-aging products and procedures like preventative Botox and fillers.

“Younger women are increasingly bombarded with messages insisting on the necessity of these preventive measures,” Lindloff remarked, highlighting the undue pressure women face to conform to unrealistic beauty standards.
Surveying 415 women aged 18 to 35, Lindloff found that 84% were using products such as retinol and wrinkle patches, with 28% resorting to procedures like Botox, fillers, and chemical peels.
Surprisingly, Lindloff’s study revealed that using anti-aging products or procedures did not enhance appearance satisfaction. Instead, it left women feeling less genuine about their looks.
“The pressure to constantly maintain a youthful appearance is resulting in women who have already invested heavily in beauty treatments feeling obliged to spend even more time and money on additional procedures, which is concerning,” Lindloff added.
Struggles with Aging Anxiety
Registered psychotherapist Katie McKeown witnesses firsthand the societal pressure for women to look eternally young.
McKeown noted that many of her clients express dissatisfaction with their bodies and anxiety about aging, often resorting to extreme measures to preserve a youthful look.

She highlighted instances of women in their early 20s undergoing procedures like lip fillers, under-eye fillers, and Botox, all marketed as preventative measures to combat aging.
While these procedures may initially boost confidence, McKeown emphasized that the quest for eternal youth can lead to a cycle of perpetual dissatisfaction, always seeking the next treatment.

“We solve one problem, only to fixate on the next. The standards keep shifting,” McKeown pointed out.
She stressed the importance of valuing personal growth and wisdom that come with age, rather than solely focusing on physical appearances.
