Lindsey Vonn once again demonstrated on Saturday her dominance as a downhill skier in the current Olympic season. Securing her second victory in four World Cup downhill races this season, Vonn, at 41 years old, showcased an impressive return after undergoing knee reconstruction with titanium implants.
In challenging, overcast conditions in Zauchensee, Austria, Vonn outpaced Kajsa Vickhoff Lie by 0.37 seconds. Her excitement was palpable as she cheered in the leader’s box when her teammate Jacqueline Wiles claimed third place, just 0.48 seconds behind.
Despite a shortened course that she completed in under 67 seconds, Vonn reached speeds of 130 kph, marking one of the fastest runs by a female skier this season. Expressing her joy, she stated, “It feels amazing. I try to enjoy every single second I am out here because it is just so fun to go fast.”
With each win, Vonn continues to set records in the World Cup circuit, solidifying her position as the oldest race winner in the circuit’s 60-season history. Her recent triumph marked her 84th career win and her 45th victory in downhill, further extending her record.
Looking ahead, Vonn remains a strong contender for the upcoming gold medal race at the Milan Cortina Olympics on February 8, a venue where she has excelled in the past. Sofia Goggia, the 2018 Olympic champion, trailed Vonn in 17th place during Saturday’s race, while Corinne Suter, the defending Olympic champion, made a slower season debut.
The race was briefly halted due to a serious injury to Austrian skier Magdalena Egger, who suffered a season-ending fall. Despite the challenges, Vonn maintained her lead in the World Cup downhill standings, positioning herself for a potential ninth season title.
As she looks forward to the super-G race on Sunday, Vonn remains confident in her performance and hopes to continue her success on the slopes.
