“African Solar Surge: Ontario Companies Drive Growth”

Share

In our weekly newsletter, we focus on environmental developments and solutions driving us towards a more sustainable world. Recently, we explored the impact of Ontario’s solar industry on Africa, shedding light on the growth of clean technologies such as solar power beyond traditional drivers like electricity rates and climate targets.

The recent geopolitical tensions, like the U.S. and Israel’s actions affecting global oil prices, have spotlighted the importance of renewable energy sources such as solar panels in reducing dependence on fossil fuels. Notably, disruptions in oil supplies have historically led to a surge in renewable energy projects, as seen after events like the Russian invasion of Ukraine and Venezuela’s oil shipping halt to Cuba.

Africa has witnessed a significant surge in solar installations, with a remarkable 54% increase in 2025, marking its fastest growth ever. Two Ontario-based companies, Solar Panda and JCM Power, have expanded their operations into Africa, driven partly by shifts in Ontario’s political and business landscape.

Originally established during Ontario’s solar boom, these companies now play a pivotal role in providing solar solutions in African nations like Kenya, Zambia, and Malawi. Following the end of Ontario’s solar incentive programs in 2016, both companies diversified their markets abroad, capitalizing on opportunities in emerging economies across Asia, South America, and Africa.

The move towards solar energy in Africa reflects a broader trend where global political events and market dynamics influence the growth and expansion of renewable energy technologies worldwide. As Solar Panda and JCM Power continue to expand their presence in Africa, they exemplify how changing environments can foster new opportunities for sustainable energy solutions globally.

This shift towards renewable energy not only addresses the growing energy demands but also contributes to mitigating climate change impacts, highlighting the pivotal role of solar power in shaping a greener and more sustainable future for all.
