Trump Administration to Reduce Immigration Officers in Minnesota

Share

The Trump administration is scaling back the presence of immigration enforcement officers in Minnesota following the recent fatal shootings of two local residents by federal officers, according to Border Czar Tom Homan. Approximately 700 federal agents will be withdrawn from immigration operations in Minnesota as part of this move, which comes after widespread criticism from local officials and citizens over the perceived heavy-handed tactics of federal agents that resulted in the deaths of two U.S. citizens.

The victims, 37-year-old Renee Good and critical-care nurse Alex Pretti, were fatally shot by federal officers in separate incidents in January. The operation in Minnesota, known as Operation Metro Surge, involved around 3,000 federal officers, a portion of which will now be redeployed. Homan did not specify the exact number of ICE and CBP officers being recalled but mentioned that a mix of agents from both agencies would be affected.

The surge in federal presence was defended by the government as necessary to apprehend criminal immigrants and address challenges posed by state and local sanctuary laws. Homan emphasized the removal of dangerous individuals from the streets and highlighted the arrests of unauthorized individuals charged with serious crimes as a positive outcome of the operation.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has called for a quicker reduction in federal forces, stating that Operation Metro Surge has not contributed to public safety in the state. Meanwhile, Democrats are pushing for changes in ICE and CBP operations in response to the fatal incidents in Minneapolis and Chicago.

Homan stated that a full drawdown of officers would be contingent upon ceasing activities that target ICE officers, such as road blockades. Despite his presence and the removal of high-profile commander Greg Bovino, tensions remain high in Minnesota. Recent incidents involving federal agents drawing guns on activists in Minneapolis have further fueled the controversy surrounding immigration enforcement actions in the state.

In response to the fatal shootings, the Justice Department has initiated a civil rights investigation into the killing of Alex Pretti, while declining to investigate the death of Renee Good. Several federal lawyers have departed, with discontent brewing within the Justice Department over its handling of the incidents in Minnesota. Ongoing discussions between federal officials and state authorities aim to address concerns and potentially ease tensions in the region.
