Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s administration highlighted the success of enhanced law enforcement collaboration between the UK and France in reducing this year’s crossings by over 40% compared to 2025. The recent boat carrying approximately 140 individuals departed from Normandy, significantly far from the usual departure points near Calais, increasing the journey’s length and risk.
The Maritime and Coastguard Agency coordinated a rescue operation involving lifeboats, a coast guard helicopter, and a plane to bring the migrants safely ashore in Portsmouth.
