Ron Fellinger, the owner of Fellinger & Son’s Meats, reminisces about the changes he has witnessed in Regina’s Heritage neighborhood over the past five decades. He recalls when the park was a bustling area for children to play soccer and baseball. However, nowadays, the park has transformed into an encampment at Pepsi Park, with around 150 people residing in approximately 70 tents.
While past tent encampments in the area were dismantled by the city, the City of Regina now emphasizes a more person-centered approach. This approach focuses on offering outreach support to assist individuals in finding better shelter rather than immediately tearing down encampments.
Business owners in the neighborhood recently met with city officials to express their concerns about the encampment’s impact. Ron Fellinger, though not present at the meeting, voiced his discontent with the city’s decision to allow the encampment to remain. He believes that enabling such encampments will attract more individuals facing similar challenges to the neighborhood, creating an unsuitable environment.
Jarrid Linder, the service manager at Downtown Automatic Transmission, highlighted the increase in break-ins at their business as the encampment expanded. The community advocates for providing essential amenities such as showers, storage, and power to improve the living conditions of the encampment residents.
Shawn Koch, an advocate and volunteer, emphasized the importance of treating individuals without homes with dignity and respect. He mentioned that simple human interaction and mutual respect can significantly impact individuals’ well-being. City councillor Victoria Flores initiated a meeting with local businesses to address concerns and seek solutions that prioritize safety and dignity for all individuals involved.
Both Koch and Flores emphasized the need for government intervention to enhance access to permanent housing, addiction treatment, and mental health support. Ultimately, the goal is to provide comprehensive assistance to individuals experiencing homelessness and create a more supportive environment for all community members.
