Comedian Liz Miele has recently experienced a significant decrease in her earnings, a situation echoed by many others in the industry. SiriusXM has made the decision to discontinue its Raw Comedy/Raw Dog channel, which previously showcased over 800 comedians on rotation, and has introduced a new channel spearheaded by renowned comedian Sebastian Maniscalco.
This move has left Miele and numerous working-class comedians without a crucial source of income and visibility, as the new channel primarily features wealthy celebrity comedians. Miele, based in Los Angeles, shared with As It Happens host Nil Köksal that SiriusXM was instrumental in supporting her financially during a challenging period last year. She emphasized how the platform had been a lifeline for many comedians, aiding them in making ends meet, especially during difficult circumstances such as caring for sick family members or navigating parental leave.
While Maniscalco and SiriusXM have assured that the revamped channel will offer opportunities for comedians at various career stages, an industry advocacy group, Stand Up for Standup, points out a contrasting reality. Prior to the channel transition, Raw Comedy showcased over 800 comedians monthly, each receiving $15 in royalties per play of their material.
After the rebranding, the channel now features only 275 comedians, with the top 50 artists, including Chris Rock, Kevin Hart, and Jim Gaffigan, dominating over 75% of the airtime. Miele, once a top performer on the channel, expressed concern over the wealth concentration among a select group of comedians, highlighting the shift from a diverse range of artists earning decent royalties to a few individuals reaping substantial rewards.
The impact extends beyond individual comedians, as Toronto comedian Danish Anwar disclosed a significant decline in his royalties, affecting his monthly income. Anwar emphasized that many Canadian comedians relying on SiriusXM royalties for work visas may face challenges, potentially leading some to return to Canada due to financial constraints.
High-profile comedians like Patton Oswalt, Michelle Wolf, and Marc Maron have urged Maniscalco to ensure emerging talents have a platform to develop their careers. Responding to the backlash, Maniscalco clarified that he was not involved in the decision to discontinue Raw Comedy, affirming his commitment to working with SiriusXM to feature a diverse range of comedic voices on his channel.
Despite these assurances, Anwar emphasized the need for tangible support over mere statements, emphasizing the financial impact on comedians. Canadian comedian Steph Tolev highlighted the power of collective action in influencing programming decisions, urging comedians to unite and advocate for their place in the industry.
As the comedy community grapples with the repercussions of these changes, there is a growing call for solidarity and advocacy to address the financial challenges faced by comedians amidst industry shifts.
