Prime Minister Mark Carney addressed attendees in Edmonton on Wednesday during the sixth National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, emphasizing that the journey of reconciliation in Canada is ongoing. He acknowledged the deep wounds and wide gaps that still exist, highlighting that reconciliation is a continuous process rather than a final destination. Carney stressed the importance of collective progress and action to move forward together.
Focusing on Indigenous children and their families, Carney expressed his commitment to listening to their stories, reflecting on Canada’s dark history, and finding a way to advance together. He emphasized the enduring truth of past injustices and the necessity of acknowledging and acting upon the realities of residential schools.
Governor General Louise Arbour, marking her first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, underscored the importance of facing the uncomfortable truths of history to build a better future. She described the Survivors’ Flag as a symbol of both warning and hope, representing the resilience of Indigenous communities despite historical hardships.
Carney highlighted the devastating impact of the residential school system, which aimed to assimilate Indigenous children and caused lasting harm. Operating from 1857 to 1996, these institutions forcibly separated around 150,000 Indigenous children from their families. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s findings revealed widespread abuse and neglect in these schools, leading to as many as 6,000 deaths primarily due to malnutrition or disease.
Despite the TRC’s comprehensive study and calls to action, only a fraction have been implemented eleven years later. Residential school survivor Eugene Arcand emphasized the continued importance of addressing the unresolved issues and commitments outlined in the TRC report.
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre and NDP Leader Avi Lewis both called for honoring residential school survivors, supporting reconciliation efforts, and fulfilling the remaining TRC calls to action for a more just and inclusive future.
