The increasing cost of living is causing Canadian families to face difficult decisions about their spending, including the possibility of sending their children to summer camps. Due to financial constraints, Spruce Grove, Alta., resident Cinda Bischoff has decided that an overnight camp experience for her 11-year-old daughter is not feasible this summer.
Bischoff expressed the challenges of having to decline her child’s desires due to the rising costs of daily life, further exacerbated by recent health issues. As a breast cancer survivor, Bischoff highlighted the financial strain that additional costs have placed on their family.
Camp operators in Alberta are also observing financial strains on families. Jon Olfert, the executive director of Camp Valaqua in Water Valley, reported a 17% decrease in registration compared to the previous year, with some families withdrawing due to affordability issues. Despite a five percent increase in registration fees, Camp Valaqua has seen a rise in requests for financial aid, nearly doubling this year.
Similarly, Camp Evergreen near Sundre, Alta., has experienced increased demand for subsidy programs in recent years. Executive director Courtney Armstrong mentioned subsidizing approximately $120,000 in registration costs this summer to accommodate families seeking financial assistance. Despite sector-wide cost increases, Camp Evergreen has maintained fees at around $800 per week.
United Way Centraide Canada highlighted the trend of families reducing discretionary spending as household budgets tighten. Anita Khanna emphasized the impact of these cuts on children’s development and exposure to enriching experiences, creating inequities for lower-income families.
The Canadian Camps Association noted relatively stable camp enrollment nationwide but acknowledged the financial trade-offs families are making. Executive director Matt Wilfrid emphasized the importance of subsidy programs, encouraging parents to inquire about available assistance to make camp more affordable for their children.
