“RCMP Links Grand Falls-Windsor Shootings to Intimate Partner Violence”

Share

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) have stated that two recent shootings in Grand Falls-Windsor were related to intimate partner violence. Superintendent Paul Peddle mentioned that the major crimes unit is actively investigating both incidents but could not disclose extensive details due to the ongoing nature of the investigations.

During a press conference in St. John’s on Tuesday, Peddle expressed concerns about the community’s apprehension following these violent acts. He clarified that the shootings were isolated occurrences, emphasizing that there is no widespread threat to public safety. Peddle confirmed that the victims in both cases were women.

While refraining from disclosing specific details about any recent domestic disturbance calls, Peddle urged individuals to reach out to law enforcement if they suspect intimate partner violence. He highlighted the availability of support services, including assistance for mental health crises, and encouraged anyone with information about the shootings to contact the RCMP.

Peddle emphasized the seriousness with which the police approach intimate partner violence, noting that they frequently handle such cases. He underscored that the police are just one facet in assisting victims, with community support and services playing crucial roles in addressing these issues.

In one incident, a woman sustained serious injuries in a shooting last Wednesday, with the suspect’s vehicle later discovered nearby alongside a deceased individual. In a separate tragic event, another woman was fatally shot in the community. Ivan Loder, a resident of Badger, faces murder charges in connection with the death of Amanda Gilbert. The shootings have sparked community concerns, prompting calls for increased resources to combat violence against women and bolster police presence in the area.

Peddle reassured the public that Grand Falls-Windsor maintains normal staffing levels and is adequately equipped to address safety concerns. For immediate assistance or emergencies, individuals are advised to call 911. Additional support resources can be found at endingviolencecanada.org.
