Top-seeded Jannik Sinner clinched victory over Alexander Zverev in the championship match of the Madrid Open, securing his inaugural title at the event and setting a new record as the first player to claim five consecutive Masters 1000 tournaments.
Sinner dominated the third-ranked Zverev with a resounding 6-1, 6-2 triumph on Sunday, extending his winning streak to 23 matches. Prior to his Madrid victory, Sinner had triumphed at the Masters 1000 events in Monte Carlo, Miami, and Indian Wells this year, as well as in Paris last year.
Reflecting on his success, Sinner attributed it to hard work, dedication, and sacrifices. He expressed his gratitude for the results achieved, emphasizing the significance of his accomplishments.
Zverev, who had been defeated by Sinner in the semifinals of those previous tournaments, had previously won the Madrid Open in 2018 and 2021, finishing as the runner-up to Carlos Alcaraz in 2022.
During the final match at the Caja Magica tennis complex in Madrid, Sinner displayed a flawless performance, not allowing Zverev any break point opportunities.
Sinner credited his belief in himself, consistent effort, and disciplined training regimen for his ongoing success. He acknowledged the importance of having a supportive team behind him, expressing pride in his individual achievements as well as the collective effort of his team.
Looking ahead, Sinner is set to compete in Rome with the opportunity to claim victory in the sole remaining Masters 1000 tournament he has yet to win. The 24-year-old Italian aims to emulate Novak Djokovic by achieving the Career Golden Masters, a feat the Serbian has accomplished twice by winning all nine tournaments.
In the women’s final, Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine secured a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Mirra Andreeva of Russia on Saturday.
