An individual from Ontario, apprehended in a crackdown aimed at alleged affiliates of Canadian fugitive Ryan Wedding, is urging the court to safeguard the anonymity of those proposed to supervise him while on bail. Rolan Sokolovski’s legal representatives have filed a request before his upcoming bail hearing to prevent the disclosure of any details that could reveal his potential sureties. Sokolovski, holding dual Lithuanian-Canadian citizenship, is among several Canadians facing extradition to the U.S. in connection with an FBI probe involving Wedding, a former Olympic snowboarder suspected of leading an international drug trafficking operation.
According to U.S. authorities, Sokolovski is accused of money laundering for the criminal group and purchasing luxury goods for Wedding. His attorney, Scott Fenton, argued that divulging the identities of Sokolovski’s proposed sureties could put them at significant risk. In contrast, Crown prosecutors contended that there is no evidence of threats to the sureties’ safety and that concealing their identities would withhold crucial information from the public concerning the court’s forthcoming decision on Sokolovki’s release.
The Ontario Superior Court is expected to rule on the application on Monday as Sokolovski’s bail hearing commences. In the U.S. indictment against him, Sokolovski, aged 37, is described as a professional poker player, jeweler, and procurer. Allegations suggest that he managed the finances of the organization and laundered drug proceeds through his jewelry business. Court documents also claim that Sokolovski crafted a valuable necklace as payment for an alleged hitman involved in aiding the murder of a federal witness on behalf of Wedding.
The FBI has identified Wedding, believed to be evading capture in Mexico, as one of its most sought-after fugitives. In a recent development, a lawyer from the Toronto area linked to the criminal network was granted bail under strict conditions, with his wife and another relative serving as sureties. The lawyer, Deepak Paradkar, supposedly provided advice to Wedding on the witness’s murder, introduced him to drug traffickers, and oversaw intelligence operations after drug seizures by law enforcement.
Moreover, in November, the FBI in Miami confiscated an exceptionally rare Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR Roadster, valued at $13 million, as part of its inquiry into Wedding’s syndicate. The vehicle, uncovered to have been purchased by Sokolovski, is a significant piece in the ongoing investigation.
