Oksana Masters, the most decorated American Winter Paralympian, secured her 11th Paralympic gold medal in a thrilling victory at Milan Cortina. Her triumph in the women’s sprint sitting discipline in Para cross-country skiing marked a moment of redemption, as she had finished second in the same event four years prior.

The significance of the win was evident as Masters let out joyful screams, expressing her elation at the hard-fought victory. Reflecting on her performance, she described the race as a test of self-belief and determination, emphasizing the support of her team as a driving force behind her success.

Despite trailing the leader by 40 meters at the start of the final incline, Masters showcased her strength and determination, overtaking her competitor on the ascent with a powerful surge. She emphasized her ability to excel under pressure, noting her preference for chasing and gradually overtaking rivals.

This victory marked Masters’ second gold at Milan Cortina, following her earlier success in the women’s sprint sitting discipline in Para biathlon. The 36-year-old athlete overcame significant challenges in the lead-up to the Games, including surgery, a bone infection, and a concussion, making her win even more remarkable.

Masters’ impressive Paralympic career now includes a total of 21 medals, with seven gold medals in the Winter Games and four in the Summer Games. Her journey from a challenging childhood in Ukraine, marked by birth defects attributed to the Chernobyl disaster, to becoming a Paralympic champion is a testament to her resilience and determination.
