At the Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics, Saskatoon-native Maïa Schwinghammer received unwavering support from her family and friends as she competed in the women’s moguls event. Her father, Rick Schwinghammer, a former freestyle skier, has been a significant source of inspiration for the 24-year-old. Schwinghammer is among several Olympic athletes, including speed skaters Laurent Dubreuil and Béatrice Lamarche from Team Canada, who draw motivation from their parents’ athletic backgrounds.

Although Rick Schwinghammer did not compete in the Olympics, he introduced Maïa to freestyle skiing, particularly ski ballet, a popular sport in the 1970s and ’80s involving choreographed skiing tricks and theatrics. Maïa expressed gratitude for her father’s influence, which fueled her ambition to excel in the sport and secure a spot on the national team.

During the Winter Games, Rick gained attention for his emotional reaction to watching his daughter compete, leading to viral recognition. Maïa, who finished fifth in the women’s moguls competition, humorously remarked on the newfound admiration for her father, stating that it extended to her as well.

The Schwinghammer family’s sporting legacy, including Rick’s freestyle ski contributions and Maïa’s competitive achievements, has been a subject of interest. Maïa fondly recalled discovering old newspaper articles depicting her father’s ski exploits, fostering a sense of pride and connection to her family history.

Apart from the Schwinghammers, another unique family dynamic unfolded at the Olympics with alpine skiers Sarah Schleper and her son, Lasse Gaxiola, representing Mexico. The duo made history as the first mother-son pair to compete in the Winter Games, adding a distinctive touch to the event.

Sarah Schleper highlighted the rarity of their situation, being one of the few mothers competing at a high level in alpine skiing. The mother-son duo’s participation in the Games symbolizes a remarkable and unforgettable experience, showcasing the bond and dedication shared between them.

As the Winter Olympics continue, stories of familial support and extraordinary athletic achievements unfold, highlighting the diversity and spirit of competition at the Milano-Cortina Games.
