“Spyce Girlz Seasoning Faces Rebranding Dilemma”

Share

An Ottawa resident who launched her line of personalized spice blends at the age of 13 is now facing a rebranding dilemma following legal threats from the legal representatives of the iconic British pop group Spice Girls.

Lily Bond, now 22, is the proud owner of Spyce Girlz Seasoning, a local Ottawa venture that initially started at community farmer’s markets with her mother and has since expanded to retail outlets nationwide.

However, as she was gearing up to take her business to a broader market, she received a cease-and-desist letter from Smart & Biggar, the legal firm representing the Spice Girls in Canada, citing potential trademark infringement.

Reflecting on the situation, Bond expressed her disbelief, stating, “Who would have imagined that a Canadian spice vendor would be associated with a ’90s British pop band?” Both Smart & Biggar and the Spice Girls declined to provide a response to CBC’s inquiries.

Bond’s journey into the spice business began nine years ago when she, motivated by financial constraints, sought to purchase a computer for high school. With her mother’s support, they started selling their blends at local markets, earning them the moniker “the spice girls” from customers, which led to the branding of Spyce Girlz Seasoning.

In a bid to proactively address any potential conflicts, Bond opted to slightly alter the name to Spyce Girlz Seasoning and even secured a Canadian trademark for it in October 2023. Nevertheless, on March 8, 2024, Smart & Biggar challenged the trademark with the Canadian Intellectual Property Office, emphasizing the potential for consumer confusion.

Despite initially attempting to contest the legal threats, Bond found the daunting legal fees prohibitive, especially as she strived to expand her business. Consequently, she decided to rebrand to avoid further legal entanglements that could impede her growth.

Bond plans to unveil her new brand in the upcoming months, acknowledging the challenges associated with rebranding but drawing inspiration from the overwhelming support she has received from Canadians after sharing her story on CTV News.

Regarding the Spice Girls, Bond remains optimistic that the original members were not directly involved in the legal actions, citing the group’s focus on female empowerment and girl power as contrary to such disputes. As for her musical preferences, Bond leans towards Canadian ’80s rock bands like Rush.
