The driveway of a luxurious coastal residence in Malibu, reportedly owned by Nicolas Cage, collapsed on Tuesday morning due to a massive sinkhole that emerged in front of the property. The incident led to a gas leak around 6 a.m., requiring swift intervention by authorities and utility personnel. SoCalGas, the utility company, managed to contain the leak after a few hours but decided to temporarily halt natural gas services in a part of the street to prevent coastal erosion.
The sinkhole, measuring approximately 7.5 to nine meters deep and 18 meters wide, has encroached into the roadway, as confirmed by local authorities. In response to the situation, an emergency was declared by officials, and evacuation orders were issued for 31 properties in the vicinity as a precautionary measure.
Despite efforts to obtain comments, representatives for Cage remained unresponsive. Public records indicate that the property changed hands in 2024, with the previous owner disclosing Cage as the buyer to The New York Times during the transaction.
The mansion suffered damage during a coastal flooding advisory in the Los Angeles area, influenced by the remnants of Hurricane Marie, transitioning from a hurricane to a tropical storm. Although the storm avoided direct landfall, it brought precipitation and generated hazardous waves along the Southern California coast during the recent holiday weekend.
The City of Malibu emphasized that the sinkhole occurrence is interconnected with broader coastal circumstances in the region, indicating ongoing surveillance of coastal erosion in various critical points along the Pacific Coast Highway and adjacent areas.
Situated amidst the ocean and the renowned Pacific Coast Highway, the exclusive neighborhood faced disruption due to the sinkhole incident. Nicolas Cage, aged 62, is known for his recent role in the Amazon series “Spider-Noir” and is set to portray John Madden in an upcoming biographical movie about the NFL figure, scheduled for release later this year. With a career spanning over 100 films, Cage has received accolades, including an Oscar for his performance in “Leaving Las Vegas.”
