Mounties are currently in pursuit of a snowmobiler hailing from Whitehorse who has gone missing near the boundary between British Columbia and Yukon. According to authorities, a group of three snowmobilers embarked on a mission to retrieve a malfunctioning snowmobile from the vicinity of Haines Pass in northwestern B.C. on Friday. By approximately 4 p.m. that same day, one of the individuals became separated from the group, prompting the other two to return to the parking lot and wait for his return.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) were notified of the missing man by his sister, a resident of Whitehorse, around 10 p.m. on Friday. The police report highlighted that the individual was lacking essential survival gear and a satellite phone. Additionally, severe snowy and windy conditions exacerbated the situation, resulting in zero visibility.
Search-and-rescue teams from the RCMP have been strategically positioned in the area since the early hours of Saturday, with helicopter searches being conducted during brief periods of improved visibility. The collaborative efforts of Mounties from both British Columbia and Yukon are aiding in the search operation. Authorities have cautioned against individuals attempting their own search efforts, emphasizing the extreme danger involved. The RCMP statement warns that such actions could potentially divert resources towards locating additional individuals who may be lost, stranded, or impacted by avalanches.
The statement further advises individuals to approach RCMP officers stationed at various points along the Haines Highway before entering the area.
