American golfer Miles Russell, aged 17, secured his place in the upcoming U.S. Open following the 36-hole qualifier. The decision on whether Russell will have Tiger Woods’ three-time champion son as his caddie at Shinnecock Hills remains pending. Russell, ranked as the 10th amateur globally, clinched the final spot in the Florida qualifier after overcoming an early bogey in a playoff.
Charlie Woods, a close friend of Russell and sharing the same agent, accompanied him during the qualifier, providing a lighthearted atmosphere. Russell expressed his enjoyment of having his buddy on the bag, focusing more on camaraderie than golf discussions. When asked about Woods joining him at Shinnecock Hills, Russell hinted at a wait-and-see approach.
The top performer at the Florida qualifier was Giuseppe Puebla, who holds the second position in the American Junior Golf Association rankings, just behind Russell. A total of 715 players competed across 10 locations in the U.S. and Canada, contending for 43 available spots in the 126th U.S. Open.
Elsewhere, Vaughn Harber, a sophomore at Ohio State, delivered an impressive finish at The Lakes, securing his spot with a 5-under par performance in the final five holes, including an eagle. Another notable qualifier was Jackson Van Paris, who sealed his place with consecutive birdies in Ohio.
The Ohio qualifiers also saw history being made with Arni Sveinsson becoming the first player from Iceland to qualify for the U.S. Open, representing LSU. Additionally, Billy Horschel’s qualification brought a positive turn to his challenging season, while Tony Finau narrowly missed out on the opportunity to participate in the U.S. Open for the first time since 2017.
