Iran’s primary joint military command, Khatam al-Anbiya, has accused the U.S. of breaching a ceasefire by attacking an Iranian commercial vessel in the Gulf of Oman. The command vowed to retaliate against this action. A spokesperson from Khatam al-Anbiya, quoted by state media, stated that the vessel was en route from China to Iran. The spokesperson warned that the armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran would respond and retaliate against what they termed as armed piracy by the U.S. military.
This accusation and warning from Iran came shortly after President Donald Trump disclosed that the U.S. had seized an Iranian-flagged cargo ship attempting to evade a naval blockade near the Strait of Hormuz. This interception marked the first incident since the blockade of Iranian ports began the previous week. Trump mentioned on social media that the U.S. navy destroyer had issued warnings to the ship to stop, but it did not comply. Subsequently, the navy took action, stopping the vessel by damaging its engineroom and taking custody of the ship, named Touska.
The developments have cast doubt on Trump’s earlier announcement of U.S. negotiators planning to engage in talks with Iran in Pakistan. The hope of extending a fragile ceasefire, set to expire by Wednesday, was jeopardized as tensions escalated over the Strait of Hormuz. The U.S. delegation, including Vice-President JD Vance, and envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, were preparing to lead the negotiations in Islamabad. However, Iran’s attendance remained uncertain, with their chief negotiator indicating a significant gap in positions between the two sides.
Efforts to resolve the conflict through talks have faced challenges, given the recent events in the region. Iran’s decision to reclaim control over the vital Strait of Hormuz, essential for global energy supplies, has further complicated the situation.
