Students at Ingersoll District Collegiate Institute embarked on a journey inspired by a Lego set. What started as a casual lunchtime activity, assembling a model rocket, evolved into the creation of the Artemis II Explorers Club. This student group is closely monitoring the upcoming moon mission and the progress of astronaut Jeremy Hansen, an alumnus of the school.
Gavin Laidman, a student, emphasized the significance of Hansen’s journey from their small town to the grandeur of the moon, highlighting the idea that one’s origins do not limit their potential. Hansen is set to make history as the first Canadian to venture near the moon, accompanied by NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch on the Artemis II mission’s lunar orbit.
The impending mission, scheduled for launch around April 1 after delays, marks the first crewed lunar orbit mission since 1972. Hansen’s parents recently visited Ingersoll District Collegiate Institute, coinciding with a NASA news conference confirming the mission’s progress.
During their visit, Hansen’s parents presented a package from their son, containing a letter and details of the Artemis II mission, to the Explorers Club. The students, especially Ryan Knox, felt honored by the recognition and connection to the Canadian Space Agency.
Reflecting on the students’ dedication, Nancy Hansen expressed pride in the hard work displayed by the students and drew parallels between their determination and her son’s commitment to his astronaut aspirations from a young age. The teachers played a crucial role in nurturing the club’s ideas into a substantial project, with Miss Rowe, the club adviser, credited for her adeptness at organizing and implementing plans.
Apart from tracking Hansen’s mission, the club members and teachers aim to instill hope and motivation in the community, particularly in a small town like Ingersoll, by showcasing that dreams can be achievable through perseverance and effort. The Hansens found the students’ enthusiasm and engagement in their son’s journey heartwarming, emphasizing the value of nurturing interests and creating lasting memories for young individuals.
