Toronto police have named the two individuals who lost their lives in a targeted shooting at the Salsa on St. Clair festival on Saturday night. Shaquan Quashie, aged 25, and Cesar Vernaza, aged 20, were fatally shot in the vicinity of St. Clair Avenue and Arlington Avenue, marking the 19th and 20th homicides in Toronto this year. Police Chief Myron Demkiw stated at a press briefing on Monday that the victims were acquainted with each other.
While one victim was pronounced dead at the scene, the other succumbed to injuries in the hospital. Additionally, five individuals were injured by gunfire but their wounds were not life-threatening. Two firearms were found at the scene, although the police currently have no leads on any suspects.
Security footage captured the chaos at the festival, showing people fleeing the scene following the outbreak of gunfire. The annual Salsa on St. Clair, a celebration of Latin culture, food, and music, was disrupted by the shooting incident prompting the cancellation of the festival’s second day.
A somber vigil was held at Matthew’s United Church, where attendees observed a minute of silence and lit candles in memory of the victims. Pastor Miguel Rojas led prayers for the deceased, the injured, and their families, calling for peace and unity in the community.
Expressing his dismay at the shooting, Mayor Demkiw urged for stricter consequences in cases of violence during public events, advocating for reforms in the legal system. He emphasized the importance of preserving Toronto’s vibrant festival culture and thanked the residents for their solidarity in times of adversity.
