Ethan Katzberg, a young hammer thrower, achieved an outstanding feat in Budapest by delivering a remarkable performance at the 16th Gyulai István Memorial. The 24-year-old Canadian set a season best, meet record, and world-leading throw of 83.64 meters to clinch victory in the men’s event, surpassing Germany’s Merlin Hummel (81.74).
Last year, Bence Halász of Hungary outperformed Katzberg with a meet record of 83.18, but this time, he settled for third place with an 81.65 effort. Katzberg, who previously won the event in 2024, expressed his fondness for Budapest, where he began his career and feels motivated by the strong international competition to further enhance his performance.
In a dominant display, Katzberg took an early lead with an 82.47-meter throw in the first round, maintaining his advantage over Halász. Despite challenges from Hummel, Katzberg secured victory with his impressive 83.64-meter throw. As the current Olympic and world champion, Katzberg is the top-ranked men’s hammer thrower globally, with other top contenders like Halasz, Mykhalo Kokhan, Hummel, and Yann Chaussinand also present in the competition.
Having won all four of his season-opening competitions, Katzberg is gearing up to represent Canada at the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. His recent achievements include a winning throw of 83.33 meters at the Prefontaine Classic and securing his fourth consecutive national title in Ottawa with a throw of 81.13 meters.
The World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meet in Budapest featured athletes from 51 countries competing in various events, with sprinter Aaron Brown representing Canada and finishing fourth in the men’s 200 meters event. Brown clocked 20.20 seconds in the race, narrowly missing out on a podium finish.
