“Curling Legend Colleen Jones Honored”

Colleen Jones, the renowned curling figure and beloved CBC broadcaster who passed away on November 25, 2025, was honored this week with various recognitions. The Neptune Theatre in Halifax hosted her induction into the CBC News Hall of Fame, acknowledging her remarkable 37-year tenure at the public broadcaster.

In addition, the Colleen Jones Memorial trophy was introduced for the women’s Nova Scotia provincial championship winner. This announcement was met with enthusiasm at the annual Nova Scotia Curling Association Celebration of Excellence at Mount Saint Vincent University.

Throughout her extensive career spanning five decades, Jones achieved six national curling titles, tied for a record, along with an impressive 16 provincial titles and participation in 21 Scotties Tournament of Hearts.

The unveiling of the trophy, attended by numerous curlers, supporters, and family members, featured a tribute to Jones’s gum-chewing habit during games. Her son, Luke Saunders, expressed gratitude for the fitting honor and collaboration with the Nova Scotia Curling Association in commemorating his mother.

Jones’s early success at the age of 19 as a provincial titleholder in 1979 marked the beginning of a legacy that included multiple Scotties appearances and a significant broadcasting career with CBC Sports.

Notably, Jones, alongside her teammates, clinched four consecutive Scotties championships from 2000 to 2004, in addition to securing two world championships. Recognized for her outstanding achievements, Bruce Rainnie, the president of Nova Scotia Sports Hall of Fame, hailed Jones as the province’s greatest curler, emphasizing her commitment to excellence and perseverance.

Jones’s contributions extended beyond her sporting achievements; she also made history as the first female sports anchor in the province and covered numerous Olympic Games during her broadcasting career. Her legacy was further cemented by her induction into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame in 2016 and the Order of Canada in 2024.

The late Colleen Jones continues to be remembered for her exceptional curling prowess and broadcasting excellence, leaving an indelible mark on the sports community and beyond.
