U.S. CIA Director John Ratcliffe engaged in discussions with Russian intelligence officials during his recent trip to Moscow, as confirmed by the Kremlin on Wednesday. However, he did not have a meeting with President Vladimir Putin. The visit was described by U.S. President Donald Trump as being somewhat regular.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov informed the press that Putin had been briefed on the outcomes of the visit, which occurred amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the stalemate in U.S.-Iran peace negotiations. Peskov refrained from disclosing the specific topics discussed or providing further elaboration.
Peskov mentioned, “I can confirm that there were communications via security services. I can also confirm that there were no official meetings with the Russian president. Naturally, President Putin is continually updated on all developments.”
The purpose of Ratcliffe’s visit was not explicitly stated by Trump during a radio interview, although he expressed optimism about its potential outcomes. Trump emphasized efforts to end the conflict in Ukraine, hinting that positive developments could arise from the visit.
The most recent known visit by a U.S. CIA director to Moscow before Ratcliffe was his predecessor William Burns’ meeting with Putin in November 2021, just three months before the escalation of the conflict in Ukraine. When asked about the potential impact of high-level U.S. official visits on U.S.-Russia relations, Peskov highlighted the value of ongoing contacts between the intelligence agencies of both countries.
He stated, “Such engagements often persist even during challenging times in bilateral relations. Our president has acknowledged this. However, it is premature to gauge the full extent to which these interactions will contribute to overcoming the current crisis in our bilateral relations.”
