Police in West Kelowna, British Columbia are searching for an individual who, while dressed in a Cat in the Hat costume, reportedly pursued a teenager in the Okanagan area. The teenage girl managed to reach her home safely, and the suspect remains unidentified.
Authorities have shared a photograph of the individual in the Cat in the Hat attire, standing on a street at night, donning the iconic red-and-white striped hat. While wearing such a costume is not illegal, the police label the incident as a troubling prank. They caution that following someone in a manner that induces fear for their safety could potentially amount to criminal harassment.
The Cat in the Hat character, originating from the book by Dr. Seuss in 1957 and later portrayed in a 2003 movie by Mike Myers, is widely recognized. West Kelowna RCMP urges anyone with surveillance footage from the 2000 block of Shamrock Drive around 9 p.m. on August 24 to come forward.
Cpl. Devon Gerrits emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating that even if the actions were intended as a joke, causing a young person to feel unsafe is deeply alarming. Police advise parents to instruct their children to head towards populated areas if they suspect they are being followed, and to seek help from a trusted adult or dial 911 in case of immediate danger.
