Bobbing on top of an overturned skiff in the icy waters of Alaska’s Bering Sea, a 15-year-old boy was rescued by a fishing vessel after enduring days of ordeal, as confirmed by the U.S. Coast Guard. Unfortunately, the boy’s brother and a cousin did not survive the tragic incident, succumbing to the harsh conditions after the boat capsized.
The distressing discovery of the bodies was made subsequent to the teenager’s rescue near St. Lawrence Island, a secluded Alaskan outpost located closer to Russia than the United States. Captain Adam White of The Northwest Explorer, the fishing boat involved in the rescue operation, described the young survivor as remarkably resilient, having clung to the skiff for nearly three days.
Following a distress call from the family reporting the trio missing, Coast Guard search efforts commenced on Monday morning. The group had departed from St. Lawrence Island on Friday with plans to return by early Sunday, according to Coast Guard reports, although the names of the individuals were not disclosed.
The Coast Guard’s air crews spotted the boy on Monday morning and swiftly mobilized a rescue operation, providing him with essential supplies and contacting The Northwest Explorer for assistance. In a gripping video of the rescue mission, the boy can be seen in a bright yellow jacket perched on the overturned skiff, eventually being safely hoisted aboard the fishing vessel.
Upon boarding The Northwest Explorer, the boy exhibited signs of hypothermia, prompting the crew to promptly provide warmth through blankets and hot packs. Captain White recounted the boy’s account, mentioning that his brother had been trapped under the skiff while his cousin had tragically passed away the previous night before their rescue.
