The leader of the Forever Canadian movement advocating for Alberta’s unity within Canada praised Prime Minister Mark Carney on Friday, describing him as a calming and reassuring figure for Albertans. Thomas Lukaszuk, a former Alberta deputy premier, commended Carney for demonstrating strong leadership in trade negotiations with the White House, emphasizing the importance of having someone steering the ship.
During a visit to Banff, Alberta, Carney met with volunteers from the Forever Canadian initiative at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity. Surrounded by around 50 supporters carrying red and white signs, some adorned with the maple leaf symbol, Carney inscribed “Canada is everyone and for everyone” on the campaign’s bright pink recreational vehicle, which is touring the province.
The attendees erupted into a rendition of O Canada, demonstrating their patriotism and support for the cause. Alberta is gearing up for a critical referendum on October 19 to decide whether to proceed with a second vote on potential secession from Canada.
While emphasizing the importance of national unity, Carney refrained from actively campaigning for Albertans to remain in Canada, focusing instead on delivering his economic agenda for the province and the country. He urged Albertans to participate in the upcoming referendum, emphasizing the significance of every vote.
Lukaszuk expressed optimism that Carney would eventually become more directly involved in the campaign, hoping for increased engagement from the federal Conservative Party as well. He called for a united front across party lines, stressing the non-partisan nature of the issue and the need for collective effort.
At the conclusion of their meeting in Alberta, federal cabinet members did not outline specific plans to engage in the pro-unity campaign. Emergency Management Minister Eleanor Olszewski underscored the federal government’s role as a supportive partner to Alberta, emphasizing collaboration and unity in building a strong and cohesive nation together.
Olszewski highlighted the government’s actions as a testament to their commitment to Alberta, while also affirming their call for Albertans to vote in favor of remaining in Canada. Mayor Jeromy Farkas of Calgary commended Carney and his cabinet for their dedication to engaging with Albertans at various levels, acknowledging their efforts to listen, learn, and support the common cause.
