Young Canadians are facing a tough job market when it comes to finding employment opportunities. Recent reports indicate that landing a first job has become increasingly challenging for the youth in the country. At a job fair in Calgary targeting individuals aged 15 to 24, recent graduate Jay-Owen Angeles expressed his struggles, having applied to over 100 companies without any success in securing an interview. His brother, Ronin Angeles, also shared similar difficulties, mentioning the challenges even in landing food service interviews.
The job market competition remains fierce, with thousands of young Canadians resorting to job fairs to make a personal impression. Despite their efforts, young workers are disproportionately affected by job losses, accounting for half of the job losses in the first quarter of the year, despite comprising only 14% of the workforce. The demand for hiring in sectors that typically employ young individuals has weakened, exacerbating the situation in an uncertain economic climate with a growing population.
The Chief Economist of Servus Credit Union, Charles St-Arnaud, highlighted that businesses’ reluctance to hire is impacting the youth the most, and this trend is expected to persist in the coming months. Statistics Canada’s latest labor force survey revealed that the unemployment rate for Canadians aged 15 to 24 stood at 13.8% in March, significantly higher than the overall rate of 6.7%.
Factors such as higher energy prices, trade tensions, and the emergence of artificial intelligence have made employers more cautious about hiring, affecting opportunities for summer jobs, internships, and co-op positions for young individuals. The effects of these challenges could have long-lasting implications, with entry-level positions becoming scarcer and young job-seekers facing significant hurdles in gaining valuable work experience and skills.
As the job market remains challenging, initiatives such as the federal summer jobs program aim to provide support to young Canadians by offering wage subsidies to employers to create job opportunities across various sectors. Despite the difficulties, experts advise young job-seekers to stay positive and persistent in their job search efforts to navigate through the tough job market landscape.
