A Canadian national has been reported dead in Iran under circumstances implicating the Iranian government, as stated by Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand. Expressing concern on social media, Anand urged the regime to halt its violent actions towards protesters, with over 2,600 casualties documented since the demonstrations commenced in late December, according to the U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA).

Anand condemned the Iranian government for disregarding human life in response to peaceful protests by its citizens demanding their voices be heard amid ongoing human rights abuses. She conveyed her condolences to the victim’s family in Canada, with consular officials from Canada currently in contact with them.

Global Affairs Canada (GAC) acknowledged the death of a Canadian in Iran on Wednesday but did not disclose further details. GAC is recommending that Canadians in Iran leave the country if they can do so safely due to escalating tensions in the region, with U.S. President Donald Trump threatening “very strong action” if Iran proceeds with executing protesters.

The United States is reportedly withdrawing some personnel from Middle East bases following a warning from a senior Iranian official that Tehran would target American bases if provoked. This comes amidst heightened regional tensions.
