Canadian Prime Minister is preparing to visit China, with his parliamentary secretary, MP Kody Blois, revealing that Mark Carney is keen on “realigning” Canada’s previous strained relationship with the Chinese government to explore economic prospects for both nations. Blois mentioned in an interview that Carney sees potential for collaboration during the upcoming trip, which he considers a pivotal moment in the relationship.

The Prime Minister’s itinerary includes a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in China, followed by visits to Qatar and Switzerland to attend the World Economic Forum annual meeting in Davos. The visit to China holds significance for the Prairie provinces, urging Carney to address the tariffs imposed on Chinese electric vehicles in 2024, which led to retaliatory tariffs on Canadian canola, seafood, and pork.

Blois highlighted the government’s interest in cooperative ventures in agriculture and agri-food with China. While avoiding speculation on immediate outcomes, Blois acknowledged the economic importance of the Chinese market for Canada. Saskatchewan’s canola farmers continue to feel the impact of the tariffs, with estimates suggesting substantial financial losses.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford urged Carney to maintain the tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, emphasizing the need for a strong stance in negotiations. Chinese investment in Canada, particularly in electric vehicles, has faced challenges, with discussions ongoing.

Carney’s upcoming trip signifies the first visit by a Canadian Prime Minister to China since 2017. The strained relations between the two countries, stemming from the detention of two Canadians after Canada’s arrest of Huawei’s CFO, have created obstacles. Despite the historical tensions, former national security adviser Jody Thomas stressed the importance of engaging with China to navigate critical global relationships.

Michael Kovrig, one of the detained Canadians, expressed cautious optimism about expanding trade ties while safeguarding national security interests. Emphasizing the need for dialogue with China, MP Blois highlighted the necessity of being at the negotiation table, even amid challenges.

As Canada navigates complex diplomatic waters, engaging with China becomes crucial for economic and strategic reasons, despite past disagreements. The upcoming visit holds promise for potential dialogues and collaborations between the two nations.
