A recent review conducted by former NHL player and executive Brendan Shanahan has outlined 11 recommendations aimed at enhancing junior men’s hockey in Ontario. Shanahan, a distinguished Hockey Hall of Famer and former president of the Toronto Maple Leafs, was tasked by Hockey Canada to assess junior hockey in the province earlier this year.
The report, released by Hockey Canada, is geared towards fostering the development of junior hockey in Ontario and providing better support for athletes. It also aims to assist teams and leagues in adapting to changes in NCAA eligibility criteria, which have altered the landscape of junior hockey and increased playing opportunities for 19 and 20-year-old players.
Shanahan expressed his appreciation for the dedication of individuals involved in men’s junior hockey in Ontario, emphasizing the need for a thriving system. The 11 recommendations put forth in the report are a result of feedback gathered from various stakeholders across the province, with a focus on prioritizing athlete development and creating clearer pathways for players and their families.
The junior hockey system in Ontario is recognized for its complexity compared to other provinces, with three member associations and multiple Junior A, B, and C leagues operating within the region.
The recommendations, based on over 50 interviews and a survey involving 700 participants, include the establishment of an executive role within Hockey Canada to oversee men’s junior hockey in Ontario. Other suggestions involve separating the governance and delivery of junior and minor hockey, creating an advisory committee, and implementing standardized playing rules. Additionally, the report calls for improved communication with other hockey entities and the development of support programs for players both on and off the ice.
Notably, the report has received approval from Hockey Eastern Ontario, Hockey Northwestern Ontario, the Ontario Hockey Federation, and Hockey Canada. President and CEO Katherine Henderson has expressed enthusiasm for implementing Shanahan’s recommendations promptly to enhance the overall experience for players and their families.
