Michael J. Fox Honored with Higher Rank in Order of Canada

Actor Michael J. Fox, known for his advocacy against Parkinson’s disease, expressed a mix of “pride” and “humility” upon being honored with a higher rank in the Order of Canada. During the ceremony at Rideau Hall, attendees gave a standing ovation as Governor General Louise Arbour bestowed upon him the companion level of the prestigious Order.

According to Rideau Hall, Fox’s promotion to companion level recognizes his impactful global efforts and candid portrayal of living with Parkinson’s. Reflecting on the event, Fox emphasized his deep connection to Canada, its values, and its progress over the years.

Parkinson’s disease, a degenerative disorder affecting the nervous system, is characterized by symptoms like tremors and cognitive issues. Since disclosing his Parkinson’s diagnosis in 1998, Fox has been actively involved in fundraising for Parkinson’s research and sharing personal insights on managing the condition.

Acknowledging Canada’s contributions to Parkinson’s research, Fox highlighted the country’s advancements in treatments like deep brain stimulation. The ceremony also honored 50 other individuals for their exceptional achievements and contributions to various fields.

Governor General Arbour commended the inductees for using their talents to benefit others, emphasizing the importance of community involvement and collective progress. She lauded Fox as a role model for his commitment to positive change and resilience.

The reference to Fox’s iconic roles in the “Back to the Future” film series was made in connection to his enduring impact on popular culture. Among the distinguished honorees were academics like Yusuf Altintas and Nada Jabado, recognized for their pioneering work in their respective fields. Additionally, former Bank of Canada governor Stephen Poloz and sculptor Ruth Elsie Abernethy were also honored for their significant contributions.

Investigative journalist Susanne Craig, renowned for her work with major publications, was recognized for her outstanding coverage of contemporary issues in the U.S. Other honorees included Colin Roswell Clarke for his musical contributions and Marcelle Dubois for her efforts in promoting Quebecois playwriting. Triton Submarines co-founder Patrick Joseph Lahey was acknowledged for his expertise in submersibles and commitment to safety standards in deep-sea exploration.
