A popular ice cream shop and family dairy farm in Sicamous, British Columbia, experienced a devastating fire overnight, resulting in the loss of multiple structures and dozens of animals. Bianca Colonna, whose parents operate D Dutchmen Dairy, reported that the fire began around 1 a.m. PT, consuming three buildings, including a barn housing approximately 40 calves that tragically perished in the blaze. Colonna shared that each animal had a name and was considered part of the family, recounting how her young son had a special bond with the calves.
Established in 1978 by Chris and Nellie Dewitt, D Dutchmen Dairy has grown into a beloved roadside attraction off the Trans-Canada Highway, renowned for its ice cream and farm animals. While the ice cream shop was unscathed by the fire, it remains closed as the family evaluates their next steps. Colonna described how the flames quickly engulfed the old wooden barns, leading to the loss of the calves but highlighted that firefighters managed to save the milking parlour and cow section, even rescuing a cow that had fallen during the chaos.
The cause of the fire remains unknown, prompting the business to request that the public refrain from visiting the farm at this time. Sicamous Mayor Colleen Anderson expressed deep sorrow over the incident, emphasizing the significant community ties of D Dutchmen Dairy, which has been a cornerstone of the area for nearly five decades. Laurie Kubos from Askew’s Food, a local milk retailer, reminisced about her childhood memories of visiting the farm, underscoring the profound impact the business has had on the community.
Owner Jake Dewitt, son of the founders, revealed in a 2021 interview that the dairy farm attracts 180,000 visitors annually and employs up to 25 staff during peak periods. He attributed the shop’s popularity to its picturesque setting, quality goods, and renowned ice cream, particularly favored by customers from Alberta. The community has rallied around the family-owned establishment, recognizing its extensive support for charitable causes and organizations throughout the years. The community stands in solidarity with D Dutchmen Dairy during this challenging time, reflecting on the cherished memories shared at the beloved local institution.
