The Toronto Blue Jays debuted their newly established Hall of Excellence on Saturday, coinciding with a special ceremony honoring 2026 inductee Buck Martinez at Rogers Centre. Celebrating their 50th anniversary season, the Blue Jays introduced the section dedicated to recognizing the franchise’s most influential figures. The inaugural 11 honorees from the former Level of Excellence were enshrined in the hall, located on the concourse behind right field at the downtown stadium.
Martinez, a former Blue Jays player and manager, was set to be formally inducted before the team’s afternoon game against the Seattle Mariners. The 77-year-old, who also had a long tenure as a team broadcaster before retiring recently, will join the likes of José Bautista, Paul Beeston, George Bell, Joe Carter, Tom Cheek, Carlos Delgado, Tony Fernandez, Cito Gaston, Pat Gillick, Roy Halladay, and Dave Stieb in the esteemed hall.
Speaking at a media briefing, Stieb praised Martinez as an exceptional teammate who had a calming influence on him during intense moments on the field. The Hall of Excellence, building upon the tradition of the Level of Excellence, aims to honor various figures such as players, coaches, managers, builders, and broadcasters across different eras to connect fans with the rich history of the Blue Jays.
Martinez concluded his playing career in 1986 after a successful 17-year stint in Major League Baseball with the Blue Jays, Kansas City Royals, and Milwaukee Brewers. Known for his astute skills as a catcher, Bell acknowledged Martinez’s ability to mentor young and rookie pitchers, guiding them through their initial stages in the league.
Martinez’s broadcasting journey commenced in 1982 while he was still an active player with the Blue Jays, covering postseason games and the all-star game for the Telemedia Radio Network. Transitioning to television broadcasting in 1987 as a color analyst, Martinez went on to announce over 4,000 Blue Jays games throughout his career. He also briefly managed the Blue Jays in the early 2000s, finishing with a record of 100-115.
His final broadcast appearance was during the last year’s World Series alongside his longtime partner Dan Shulman. Martinez has contributed to various media outlets, including ESPN, XM Radio, TBS, The Baseball Network, TSN, and MLB International. In recognition of his significant impact on Canadian baseball, he received the Jack Graney Award from the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 2023.
