Sandra Abstreiter took a chance on herself two years ago, and her efforts paid off on Friday night when she achieved her first shutout in the Professional Women’s Hockey League. Named the game’s top performer, Abstreiter made 39 saves in a 3-0 victory against the Ottawa Charge, propelling her Montreal Victoire team to the top spot in the standings.

Abstreiter’s journey to this success was filled with challenges as she was initially drafted by Ottawa in the 12th round of the 2023 PWHL draft. After a brief stint with the Ottawa franchise in the league’s debut season, she transitioned to a reserve contract with the Victoire, where she continued to hone her skills despite not starting any games the following season.

Reflecting on her progress, Abstreiter acknowledged the learning opportunities she embraced alongside her goalie partners, including Ann Renee-Desbiens. Her dedication and hard work led to a contract extension with Montreal, where she now serves as the backup goaltender.

Victoire’s head coach, Kory Cheverie, commended Abstreiter’s growth and performance, highlighting her pivotal role in calming the team and making crucial saves during the game. The matchup, held at the Canadian Tire Centre in front of a sizable crowd, saw Abstreiter relishing the electric atmosphere, even if the cheers were not in her favor.

Facing her former team added a special significance to Abstreiter’s shutout achievement, despite parting ways amicably with Ottawa. She expressed gratitude for her time with the Charge but emphasized the importance of seeking new challenges and roles within the league.

Cheverie praised Abstreiter’s professionalism and commitment, underscoring the competitive nature of playing as a backup goaltender in the league. The loss proved costly for the Charge, who are in a tight playoff race and must secure points in their remaining games.

Looking ahead, the Victoire will host Seattle on Tuesday night, while the Charge will face Seattle on Wednesday night. Both teams are gearing up for crucial matchups as the season progresses.
